Sunday night Serena Williams looked beautiful in her appearance at Sir Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party – but who knew that a serious health scare was awaiting her the very next day. On Monday Serena was spotted at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
“Monday Serena Williams underwent emergency treatment at Cedars for a hematoma she suffered as a result of treatment for a more critical situation,” Williams’s rep, Nicole Chabot, said in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE.
Nicole went on to say in the PEOPLE article “Last week, Serena suffered from a pulmonary embolism [a blood clot in the lungs] which was discovered upon her return to L.A. She had been in New York for doctor appointments for the ongoing issues with her foot.”
She apparently had been spotted several times at the hospital over the last week, according to Jennifer Garcia from PEOPLE.
The rep added, “Doctors are continuing to monitor her situation closely to avoid additional complications.”
After getting her cast off recently, fans were getting excited to see her start training again. Unfortunately her anticipated return will be postponed again for good reason. Apparently her foot injury was a lot more serious than originally thought. We wish her a very speedy recovery.

To Ms. Serena Williams:
We are praying for a speedy recovery, Serena. US women’s tennis suffers greatly without you and your passion for the game. As a matter of fact, we have no US players at this time to win any tournaments….sad state of affairs for America’s tennis program. I have always said the the USTA should focus more on low income communities…an abundance of untapped talent. Take care of yourself and we await your retun.
