Water Leak Halts Play on Louis Armstrong Stadium

Two days of rain at the U.S. Open causes some unexpected court damage.

Flushing Meadows, NY—For the past two days, rain has interrupted play the U.S. Open, creating a backlog of matches. Today, the bright sunshine was a welcome site, but the rain from Tuesday and Wednesday caused some damage to the court in Louis Armstrong stadium, just behind the baseline. Numerous attempts were made today to fix the problem, but to no avail.

Statement from the USTA:

“We have faced an inordinate amount of rain in August and through the early part of September, which has saturated the court surfaces at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. All courts were completely dried prior to play on Thursday, September 8. However, as the sun began to warm, or “bake” the courts, evaporation of these saturated conditions began to surface on Louis Armstrong Stadium. Until this situation is rectified, no further play will occur on Louis Armstrong Stadium.”

Matches scheduled on Louis Armstrong Stadium have been moved to court 13 for today.
