After gaining more than 50 rankings points in a sizzling stretch from summer to November—and making her first WTA final—Laura Robson was named the WTA’s newcomer of the year in a vote by international tennis media. After starting the summer ranked in the 113, she finished the season ranked 53rd—one spot below her best of 52. ”It’s a huge honor to have won the 2012 WTA Newcomer Of The Year award,” Robson said. “I looked at the list of past winners and it’s certainly a very impressive line-up that includes many of my idols growing up – I hope that I can go on to achieve close to what many of the past winners have achieved in their careers. 2012 has been a very enjoyable year for me and I look forward to building on the progress that I have made in 2012 and the season ahead.”

Robson said her personal highlights for the year were winning the silver medal in doubles at the Olympics in London with partner Andy Murray and making her second week run at the U.S. Open. ”I am working hard and it’s nice that the hard work is paying off!”
