Laura Robson outlasted Petra Kvitova 11-9 in the third set and advanced to the third round.

Serena Williams brushed off worries about her rolled ankle by brushing off Garbine Muguruza 6-2 6-0, punctuating the match with a 128-mph ace. The only physical drama in the match came late in the first set, when she whacked herself in the lip with her racket on a follow-through, splitting her lip. Defending champion Victoria Azarenka took advantage of her early match time, avoiding the scorching midday heat by making quick work of Eleni Daniilidou 6-1 6-0 in just under an hour. Temperatures reached 106 during Caroline Wozniacki’s 6-1 6-4 win over Donna Vekic. Laura Robson continued her Grand Slam surge, eliminating eighth-seeded Petra Kvitova 2-6 6-3 11-9. The third set alone took 95 minutes, and the players combined to make 92 unforced errors in the match. Robson now gets fellow upstart Sloane Stephens in the third round, but Stephens will have a lot less rehydrating to do. She beat Kristina Mladenovic 6-4 6-3 in an hour and a half. Kimiko Date-Krumm was the oldest women to win a match Australian Open history in the first round, and now she’s the oldest to win two, eliminating Shahar Peer 6-2 7-5. Seeded players Maria Kirilenko, Yanina Wickmayer and Roberta Vinci advanced to the third round, while seeds Hsieh Su-Wei, Varvara Lepchenko, and Lucie Safarova lost.
