Serena Williams needed just 66 minutes to breeze past Ayumi Morita 6-1 6-3—hitting a 129 mph serve in the process—while defending champion Victoria Azarenka fended off Jamie Hampton 6-4 4-6 6-2. Hampton hit 41 winners despite requiring a trainer’s timeout for a back problem. Kimiko Date-Krumm’s Cinderella run through the draw at age 42 came to an end. She lost a mistake-filled match 6-2 7-6 to Bojana Jovanovski. In a match between rising stars, American Sloane Stephens eliminated Olympic mixed  doubles gold medalist Laura Robson 7-5 6-3. Caroline Wozniacki and Svetlana Kusnetsova also advanced, while Roberta Vinci was upset in three sets by Elena Vesnina. Williams will face Kirilenko for a spot in the quarters, and Azarenka gets Vesnina.
