Australian Open: Serena, Vika Pound Path to QFs

Updated: January 21, 2013

Svetlana Kuznetsova eliminated Caroline Wozniacki in the fourth round at the Australian Open.

The three best players in the world are setting up an explosive second week at Melbourne Park. After Maria Sharapova set the bar with her fourth straight dismantling, Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka matched it with overwhelming performances of their own. Williams crushed 14th seed Maria Kirilenko 6-2 6-0 in 57 minutes, hitting 125-mph serves and making just six errors. Azarenka needed the same 57 minutes to beat Elena Vesnina 6-1 6-1. Also advancing on this side of the draw was Sloane Stephens—who made her first Grand Slam quarterfinal by beating Bojana Jovanovski—and Svetlana Kuznetsova, who outlasted Caroline Wozniacki 6-2 2-6 7-5. The two-time Grand Slam champion is returning to form after an extended absence from a knee injury. The loss will likely drop Wozniacki out of the top 10 in the rankings for the first time in four years. Stephens won’t have much time to savor her victory. She and Williams will play on Tuesday in one quarter, while Azarenka faces Kuznetsova.
