Ana Ivanovic defeats Venus Williams to win Auckland
2014 year starts well for the world No.16 serbian after she beat the 33-year-old American in a 2h19′ battle 6-2 5-7 6-4.
This is the 12th title for Ana, the first one since November 2011 when she won the Tournament of Champions in Bali :
“Every victory is special, but this one is even more special because it’s been a while since I won a tournament,” she said.
Now she will be having a week of recovery and training in Melbourne before the Australian Open, tournament in which she was runner up in 2008.
This final is also a good result for the seven-time grand slam champion after a terrible 2013 year where she spent most of her time struggling with her back injuries.
Venus admitted that she is not at her best with many unforced errors but is fighting to reach her peak form : “I didn’t feel I was playing my best but I fought as hard as a I could, no matter what the score was”.
Unlike Ivanovic , she decided to play next week and will face Flavia Pennetta in Hobart first round from Tuesday.
