After a week of intense competition the 2008 Roland Garros women’s field has been narrowed down to only sixteen players.
Just two former Grand Slam champions remain alive in the draw—three-time major champion Maria Sharapova and 2004 US Open winner Svetlana Kuznetsova.

After struggling to a hard fought win on Wednesday, top seed and world No. 1 Maria Sharapova is headed right back on court Thursday for her second round match against Bethanie Mattek.

Only eight women’s singles matches were completed on Tuesday at Roland Garros, forcing tournament organizers to plan an ambitious schedule of play for Wednesday.
